8 Hanukkah events throughout the Houston area | Jobs Reply

HOUSTON – The first night of Hanukkah is Sunday and ends on December 26th.

As the Chabad Outreach of Houston website describes it, “Chanukah is an eight-day holiday that marks the end of oppressive Greek rule against the Jews and their holy temple in Jerusalem more than 2,100 years ago. Hanukah commemorates many miracles: a small group of courageous Jews one fought against huge armies for religious freedom and won; when the temple was rededicated, a small flask of olive oil that still had the seal of purity was found and used to light the sacred temple lamp (menorah); the oil was supposed to run out after one day but eight days it lasted, giving time to manufacture more pure oil.

β€œThe Hanukkah holiday has a universal message for people of all faiths; namely, that good will ultimately triumph over evil, freedom over oppression and light over darkness. The Chanukah Menorah teaches us another message: just as we light an extra candle each night of the holiday, we must also perform additional acts of kindness and goodness. We should not be content with the good we did yesterday.”

Want to celebrate this holiday, Houston? Here are eight ways to get in on the fun around the field.
