CelcomDigi and U Mobile announce 5G support for iPhone

CelcomDigi and U Mobile announced that they now support 5G cellular for the iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and the iPhone 12 series. This includes the Pro lineup of each series.

On Celcom, 5G service is currently only available to Celcom Mega Lightning, Xpax Postpaid and Xpax Prepaid Mix & Match subscribers on Digi, it’s available on the Digi Postpaid 90, 120, 150, and Family Unlimited plans. 5G is not available for individual postpaid family plans. Additionally, users need to go into their MyDigi app and enable 5G by selecting it as a free add-on called 5G Speed Booster.

U mobile offers 5G to all its U postpaid 38, 68 and 98 subscribers as well as its prepaid U25, U35 and U40 subscribers.

According to Digital National Berhad (DNB), 5G coverage is expected to reach 40% of populated areas by the end of the year and is mainly concentrated in urban areas, with Klang Valley having the widest coverage.

To get 5G service, users need to make sure they have updated their iPhone 12 or later to iOS 16.2 and update their carrier settings to version 53.1. Both can be done in the settings. The iOS update is under Software Update and the carrier settings update is under About if available.

Once iPhone is connected to the network, a 5G indicator will appear between the battery level and signal strength bars in the upper-right corner of the display.

While 5G connection speed and stability will vary by implementation and location, the most tangible benefit of 5G is its ability to connect to more devices than 4G, meaning it’s more reliable in high-density areas.
