Des Moines, Iowa Thursday, December 15, 2022 – Dozens of police and firefighters were on holiday Wednesday evening.

The Holidays with Heroes program gave 40 local children the opportunity to shop with first responders helping them choose gifts for their families and themselves at the Merle Hay Mall Target.

“This is one of the biggest events we do every year,” Des Moines Police Lieutenant Tina Kalar said. other families.”

Children are assigned a first responder counselor and share a meal with them before shopping for their families and wrapping presents to take home.

“It’s amazing the smiles on their faces as they run down the aisles shopping for their families,” said Des Moines Fire Medic Hali VanVelzen. “It’s so nice to connect with them, get to know them and be able to spend this time helping really amazing kids.”
