Google announced today that it’s rolling out a bunch of new maps, search and shopping features. The company unveiled most of the new features during its Search event in September and is now starting to roll them out to users.
Starting today, users will be able to use Search to find their favorite dish at a restaurant near them. For example, you can search for “truffle mac and cheese near me” to see which restaurants near you have the dish on their menu. Once you’ve found a particular dish you’re looking for, you can get more information about its price, ingredients and more.
Another new Search functionality lets you use Google’s multi-search feature to find specific foods near you. Say you see something that looks interesting online, but you don’t know what it is or where to find it. Now you can use Lens in the Google app for Android or iOS to snap a picture or take a screenshot of a dish and add the words “near me” to find a place that sells it nearby.
Later this year, Google will release an update to its Lens AR Translate capabilities so that users can easily translate text in complex backgrounds. Instead of masking the original text as it currently does, Google will erase the text and recreate the sub-pixels with an AI-generated background, then overlay the translated text over the image.
As for the new Maps features, Google is introducing a new virtual search experience called Live View in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo.
“Say you’re visiting New York with plans to finish your holiday shopping and meet up with friends,” Google said in a blog post. “Hold up your phone and click the camera icon in the search bar to see nearby shops and other places like coffee shops, banks and ATMs. With AR-powered directions and arrows, you can see where it is and how far away it is — and see places that aren’t in your current view (like the clothing store around the block) to get a real sense. at a glance. “
If you want to find other places, you can tap categories to check which restaurants, bars, dessert shops, parks and transport stations are nearby. In addition to displaying information about where the locations are, users will be able to see important information about each covered location, such as whether the location is busy, if it is open, what the price range is, etc.
Another new Maps feature makes it easier for EV owners to find the best charging station for their vehicles. Now, you can search for “EV charging stations” and select the “fast charging” filter. You can also filter the channels that offer the type of plug for your EV.
Google also announced that it is expanding its “accessible places” feature globally after first launching it in the US, Australia, Japan and the UK in 2020. This feature is designed to help people determine if a location is wheelchair accessible. You can turn on the “accessibility” settings in the app, after which you will start to see the wheelchair icon in the wheelchair accessible areas. You will be able to see if the venue has accessible seating, toilets and parking. Google notes that the feature can also help if you want to avoid stairs because you have a wheelchair or use a wheelchair.
Google announced a new AR shopping feature designed to make it easier to find a match for your base. The company says its new photo library has 148 models representing a variety of skin tones, ages, genders, facial shapes, ethnicities and skin types. As a result, it should be easier for consumers to better see how different products will look to them.
“Here’s how it works: Search Google for a foundation shade across a range of prices and brands, such as ‘Armani Luminous Silk Foundation’,” Google explained in a blog post. “You’ll see how that foundation looks on models with similar skin, including before and after shots, to help you decide which one works best for you. Once you find the one you like, just choose the seller to buy from.”
Users can now shop for shoes using AR. You can start checking out shoes from brands like Saucony, VANS and Merrell starting today. The feature will be compatible with more products in the future, Google said. You can start by searching for a brand of sneakers, such as “Buy VANS green sneakers” and then click “View my space.” Then, you’ll be able to spin, zoom in and see the shoes in your space so it’s easy to see if you like the color, laces, tread, etc.
