Supermarkets and stores that aim to bring joy to the hearts of consumers this holiday season should consider reducing their advertising budgets and stop playing “Jingle Bells.”

That’s the advice given in a survey of 2,000 adults conducted by OnePoll on behalf of coffee drink company International Delight.

Sixty-four percent of those surveyed said shopping centers experience the most pressure during the winter months, more than airports (59%) and post offices (58%). Crowds (60%), long lines (53%), and noise (52%) were the main contributors to their discomfort.

The endless repetition of well-known Christmas songs is one of their biggest appeals. The top five songs on their “please don’t play too much” list are “Jingle Bells,” “Merry Christmas,” “It’s Starting to Look More Like Christmas,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” and “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

However, some of their complaints may end up having a positive financial impact on the sellers and homeowners who respond to them. Nearly half of survey respondents said they feel frustrated by shopping ads and insensitive or inappropriate content posted online during the holiday season.

Clifton, NJ-based International Delight conducted a survey to promote its holiday launch of limited edition Grinch-themed coffee creamers in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises.

“Despite the excitement of the holidays, the crowds, long lines, and noise can make what’s supposed to be the most fun time of the year feel ‘cheesy,'” says Kallie Goodwin, VP of marketing at International Delight. “We are on a never-ending mission to spread happiness and celebrate.”
