Porsche Engineering and Vodafone Business have set up Europe’s first 5G Hybrid Mobile Private Network (MPN) at the Nardò Technical Center (NTC) for the development of intelligent and connected vehicles.

The test site in southern Italy, owned and operated by Porsche Engineering, now offers its customers a real-time communications network that promises reduced delays, greater bandwidth, improved security and reliability, and faster deployment time. NTC thus underscores its role as a leading technology partner for the integrated development and validation of intelligent and connected vehicles in the global automotive industry.

5G technology helps improve a vehicle’s connectivity by enhancing the multi-level interaction between backend services, roadside infrastructure and other vehicles. This enables testing of complex traffic situations.

Nine base stations for the mobile connection are connected via a fiber optic backbone to ensure high standards of data security and available bandwidth. The cellular network enables managed hybrid access, allowing the participation of public SIM cards as well as private SIM cards managed by NTC.

The new cellular infrastructure enables 4G and 5G coverage throughout the test center, which occupies an area of ​​over 700 hectares in the Puglia region and has more than 20 routes for high-performance tests. With the Vodafone Business 5G solution, NTC aims to enable its customers to efficiently develop and validate a wide range of future business-critical applications, from new connectivity, vehicle-to-infrastructure, vehicle-to-vehicle and highly automated driving functions to self-driving vehicles .

At NTC, tests can be performed and monitored remotely thanks to the real-time capability of the 5G network.

As a next-generation MPN, the new system features a hybrid infrastructure utilizing a private network that is fully integrated with Vodafone’s public cellular network. Thanks to this innovative design, both private and public supply are provided in the same place. In this way, the local population can benefit from the availability of the fast public 5G network and at the same time NTC customers can use a private network that guarantees high standards of data security. In addition to the new mobile network, NTC now also offers its customers a high-performance 1 Gbit/s connection. This enables a fast and direct connection to the cloud, which enables globally networked collaboration and even more efficient data-driven engineering.

The new network marks another important chapter in the future-oriented development of the test center. Since the takeover of NTC by Porsche in 2012, continuous investments have been made in the modernization and technological upgrading of the proving ground. In addition to investments in workshops, safety systems and other routes, the famous 12.6-kilometer circular route with a diameter of four kilometers was completely renovated in 2019 – including the laying of fiber optic cables for fast data transmission and for appropriate road signs to validate automated driving. NTC’s new 5G network is part of wider collaborative initiatives between the Porsche Group and Vodafone, which resulted in the deployment of a standalone 5G network at the Porsche development center in Weissach, Germany, in August 2021.
