Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is committing $25,000 to make your dream event happen this summer at the region’s public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket. Your participation is needed to make this summer the best yet. Save the Harbor’s participatory budgeting process has already begun, so submit your ideas at https://tinyurl.com/STH-idea-collection-form.

Save the Harbor will host the five events that receive the most votes from the community. These events will be held at our regional public beaches in Nahant, Lynn, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy and Hull. Participatory budgeting aims to focus the community’s voice by asking citizens what events they want to see on the region’s beaches. With this process, Save the Harbor hopes to bridge access to the beach by engaging communities that may have significant challenges accessing the beach.

“Community members across the state share ownership of so many incredible beaches, so it’s exciting to create programming that allows people to take advantage of that ownership and directly choose the community, to get people excited to get out and experience it. Programs that reflect that,” said Maya Smith, Director of Partnerships and Program Development at Save the Harbour/Save the Bay.

In 2022, Save the Harbor channeled community voices by awarding $25,000 to Better Beaches through a participatory budgeting process. More than 200 community members submitted ideas for free events they wanted to see on the beaches this summer. More than 600 people voted on the winners: South Boston’s Teen Beach Bash, Dorchester’s Beats on the Beach Block Party, Lynn’s Diversity Matters Festival, which connected thousands of youth, families and community members to the beach for a free experience. , fun and accessible summer activities.

“We hope to focus the voices of people of color, people with disabilities and Spanish-speaking English speakers,” said Maria Rodriguez Ortega, Public Policy Coordinator for Save the Harbor/Save the Bay. “These groups face barriers that prevent them from enjoying the beaches of our region, due to discrimination and limited access. We strive to make our beautiful natural resources enjoyable, safe and accessible to all.’

The collection of ideas and voting is open to community members of all ages who live in Massachusetts or use Department of Conservation and Recreation beaches. For your idea to be considered for the vote, create an idea that can be free and open to the public, can be done in the summer of 2023 and meets the DCR beach use guidelines. We will prioritize events that target people of color, people with disabilities, people who do not primarily communicate in English, and other groups that do not currently have equitable access to the waterfront.

Save the Harbor will be collecting ideas until January 27th. These ideas will be used to create a ballot that citizens will vote on. Voting will take place between February 5 and March 6. Winners will be announced at Save the Harbour/Save the Bay’s Annual Shamrock Splash on March 12th in partnership with Harpoon Brewery.
