66% of smartphones launched in 3Q22 support 5G, MediaTek wins over Qualcomm: Techarc

NEW DELHI: According to a report published by Techarc on Friday, 31 smartphones or 66% of the 47 smartphone models launched in the third quarter of 2022 support 5G technology.

In terms of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) preference for the chipsets, MediaTek enjoyed an advantage as 23 (49%) of the smartphones launched during the period used its chipsets. In comparison, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon was used in 15 (32%) of the launches. Apple and UniSOC had a tie with 4 starts each. Google used its own processor for the latest Pixel model, according to the report.

However, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon has been favored for 5G smartphones with 5 OEMs using its chipsets. Mediatek’s Dimensity was used in 4 launches, the report added.

Apple, Realme and Infinix each launched four 5G smartphones in the September quarter, followed by iQOO and Oppo (3 each), Vivo, Motorola, Samsung, OnePlus and Redmi (2 each), and Google, Asus and Nothing (1 each) . ).

“Across overall smartphone launches, 5 brands preferred to go with multiple chipset vendors, in contrast to 5G where only 2 brands used multiple chipsets to launch smartphones during the quarter,” the company said in its report.

Techarc said that overall as well as 5G, the maximum launches were in the mid-range segment (Rs 12,000-25,000), with 17 of the total models launched in this segment, while in the base segment (Rs 6,000-12,000) only one 5G smartphone was launched brought to market. In contrast, no entry-level smartphone (less than 6,000 rupees) has been launched.

According to research firm IDC’s latest forecast for the entire smartphone market, 5G will account for just over half of smartphones shipped worldwide in 2022, rising to 80% by 2026.
