This huge event is about to begin February 6 and it takes the whole year. Fans will also enjoy watching other talented chess elite players play at the event. But those aside, this exciting new series it will also allow all players to participate. The six events leading up to the tournament’s semifinals will feature playoffs open to the top-ranked and top-ranked players in the rankings. This system will ensure that all chess professionals can make money and focus on doing what they love: playing chess.

The event series is the result of’s recent acquisition of the Play Magnus Group. In 2022, and the Play Magnus Group hosted two popular events, the Global Championship and the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.

The Global Championship brought an event that any player could participate in. The event’s knockout format, combined with an armageddon disparity system, created the perfect environment for an incredibly dramatic contest. The live finals in Toronto raised the tournament to a new level.

Likewise, the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour became a mainstay in chess events, with a year-round cycle and state-of-the-art studio production featuring Carls himself.

Now, the two companies are collaborating to combine the best features of both competitions. This new event will be huge, with a cohesive year-round schedule and the largest prize pool in the history of online chess.

How will the Event Series work?

The event is an evolution of the Global Championship and Chess24’s Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, combining the best features of both competitions:

6 Events

Similar to the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, it will be a six-event series culminating in the finals. A double-elimination bracket replaces the previous round-robin format, with players competing in quick games.

The six tournaments will be held throughout the year:

  • Event 1: February 6 to 10
  • Event 2: April 3 to 7
  • Event 3: May 22 to 26
  • Event 4: July 10 to 14
  • Event 5: August 28-September 1
  • Event 6: September 25 to 29

Open Qualification System

Each of the six events will feature a ranking system, giving professional players more opportunities to participate in elite tournaments. Any grandmaster can play in the playoffs, including anyone at the top of the Quick 500 Rankings. More details to come.

Stacked Tournament

The exciting new event culminates in a high-stakes tournament featuring eight players. An eight-player elimination round will determine which four players advance to the finals. The four finalists will compete in an elimination tournament, the last step before the champion emerges.
