It’s that time of year for the Top 10 Weather Events of 2022, and we had so many extreme events and highlights that we couldn’t fit into the top 10. Check them all out below and read on for the most memorable events. of 2022

#10 Double rights

Just 3 weeks later, the High Plains saw derechos, on June 13th and July 6th. The July storm caused more than $2.9 million in damage across Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. July’s derecho tore a path into the Dakotas. This double whammy of severe weather kicks off our Top 10 Weather Events of 2022 list at number 10.

#9 Epic Lake Effect

An early-season lake-effect event caused record snowfall in western New York, shutting down the city of Buffalo and forcing the Bills’ game to be moved to Detroit. Over 80″ of snow in November is #9 on the Top 10 Weather Events of 2022 list.

# 8 Easter in January

Our earliest event in the Top 10 Weather Events of 2022 was the Nor’easter in late January, which put more than 11 million people under blizzard warnings from Long Island to Maine. It was Boston’s first blizzard in 4 years and brought whiteout conditions throughout the Northeast.

#7 Mississippi River Drought

After a wet summer, moisture essentially shut down for the Midwest and Central Plains, causing a historic drought along the Mississippi River, affecting commerce, travel and daily life. Drought conditions in Mississippi come in at number 7 on the Top 10 Weather Events of 2022 list.

#6 Hurricane Nicole

The last hurricane to ever hit Florida’s east coast and the second last to hit the US, Hurricane Nicole is No. 6 on our Top 10 Weather Events of 2022 list. Nicole leveled homes in the greater Daytona Beach area and brought torrential rains to the sunshine state. We break down what made this storm so impactful.

#5 Dallas: From Drought to Flood

At one point, almost every county in Texas was under burn restrictions as the ongoing drought scorched grass and allowed large fires to burn. Then everything changed in one day. Heavy rains came in August, but the parched ground couldn’t soak them, causing massive flooding in Dallas. This brings us to number 5 of our Top 10 Weather Events of 2022.

#4 Drought and heat waves

In the same vein as #5 on our list, #4 is another year of record heat and widespread drought in the central and western United States. The number of people affected by both has this “long-duration, low-visibility” event firmly squared in our countdown.

#3 Spring relentlessly hard

An 8 billion dollar disaster in 3 months. Severe weather in the southern United States from late March to June makes up three of the Top 10 Weather Events of 2022. From tornado outbreaks to damaging winds and hail, how widespread the impacts really were.

#2 Deadly Floods: Virginia, St. Louis and Kentucky

The second half of the summer season was as dry in the Midwest and Appalachia as June and July brought devastating flooding to rural Virginia and Kentucky, St. Along with Louis, in a few weeks. Unfortunately, the flooding in Kentucky was deadly, with 48 people lost in the middle of the night due to rapidly rising floodwaters. These events come in at number 2 on our Top 10 list.

#1 Hurricane Ian

Another storm named “I” for the book, Hurricane Ian’s landfall in southwest Florida brought widespread and catastrophic effects to the southeastern United States in late September. Barrier islands were destroyed and storm surges tore homes from their homes. Hurricane Ian is one of the deadliest hurricanes in recent history and is number 1 on the Top 10 Weather Events of 2022 list.
