Toyota has issued recalls for its first mainstream electric car and one of its full-size pickup trucks for problems that could cause nuts or bolts to loosen and wheels or axles to disconnect.

Toyota has warned owners of BZ4X electric SUVs to stop driving them as the wheels may fall off. The SUVs recently went on sale in the United States, and the warning and recall announced Thursday by Toyota Motor Sales USA applies to nearly all 260 BZ4X SUVs that have been delivered to customers.

Toyota announced that BZ4X owners should stop driving the vehicle immediately. The bolts holding the wheels in place can loosen even after a relatively small number of miles on the road, allowing the wheels to come apart. Toyota is still investigating why this might happen and under what circumstances.

Toyota is warning drivers of the BZ4X crossover to stop driving

Toyota does not yet know how to fix the problem, the automaker said. Until a remedy is worked out, Toyota dealers will pick up the BZ4X and bring it to the dealership and provide a free loaner vehicle in the meantime, Toyota said.

The Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Solterra electric crossovers are jointly developed by the two Japanese automakers. They share most of their engineering and even look similar. Subaru has not announced a similar recall for the Soltara because none of them have yet been delivered to customers in the U.S., Subaru spokeswoman Jessica Tullman said in an email.

The BZ4X is Toyota’s first fully battery-powered electric vehicle that isn’t a modified version of a gasoline-powered model. Toyota previously offered an electric version of the Rav4 SUV in some markets.

According to Toyota, the axle assembly nuts on some 2022 Toyota Tundra trucks may come loose.

Toyota separately announced a recall for about 46,000 2022 Toyota Tundra full-size pickups due to loose rear axle assembly nuts. In some cases, according to Toyota, this could cause an axle sub-assembly to disconnect, affecting the truck’s stability and braking. The problem with the Tundra is unrelated to the problem affecting the BZ4X, the company added.

To fix this problem, Toyota dealers will inspect and retighten the nuts if necessary, according to Toyota. Toyota said in its announcement that some parts may be replaced if necessary at no charge. Toyota is not warning Tundra owners to stop driving their trucks immediately.
