Verizon tested a new use case with a US healthcare organization using a multi-access edge computing (MEC) 5G network and drones. According to the company, the work would improve infrastructure monitoring for hospitals.
The operator outlined ongoing work with two branches of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) covering the use of the technologies to improve security and monitor the physical infrastructure.

Verizon and the VHA are also evaluating the technologies’ ability to improve search and rescue performance in situations where patients exit medical facilities without authorization.
The companies also developed a roadmap that covers partnerships with other agencies and incorporates additional technologies to expand hospital staff capacity in emergencies and enable responsiveness beyond traditional line of sight.
Verizon currently has MEC 5G deployed in 19 markets covering 75 million people through a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
